Cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, and women living with HIV/AIDS are at a significantly higher risk due to their compromised immune systems. Recognizing this urgent health challenge, Service Yezu Mwiza (SYM), in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health, PNILMCNT and ANSS-Santé PLUS, launched a dedicated cervical cancer treatment program, providing much-needed hope and relief to women living with HIV/AIDS.
This new initiative integrates cervical cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment within the comprehensive care already offered to HIV-positive women at the center. Early detection is key in preventing cervical cancer progression, and the program employs state-of-the-art screening techniques such as Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and Pap smears, combined with timely treatment options including cryotherapy and referrals for advanced care.
Women living with HIV face unique vulnerabilities, as the immunosuppression caused by the virus increases the likelihood of persistent HPV infections and progression to cervical cancer. The new treatment program at Service Yezu Mwiza not only addresses these medical needs but also offers counseling, education, and psychosocial support to empower women in managing their health.
By integrating cervical cancer care into HIV services, Service Yezu Mwiza strengthens the continuum of care, reduces barriers to treatment, and combats stigma. This holistic approach ensures women receive comprehensive, respectful, and accessible healthcare. SYM aims to reach to 500 beneficiaries for this cancer treatment program.
The launch of this program represents a critical step forward in improving women’s health outcomes in Burundi. It is a beacon of hope and a source of relief for many women living with HIV/AIDS who now have access to life-saving cervical cancer prevention and treatment services.
